In August I travelled to Alaska with my Family ... Our 1st Visit! We encountered so many Amazing things that I'm sure you would never see Anywhere else in the World! We took a 4 day Pre- Cruise Tour and a 7 Day Southbound "Journey to the Glaciers" Princess Cruise. During our 4 Day Pre- Cruise Tour we visited Anchorage, Talkeetna/ Mt. McKinley
and Denali National Park. In Talkeetna we took a Jet Boat with "Mahay's Jetboat Adventures". On this 4 Hr tour, we were able to view many eagles, and also watch Salmon reseachers tagging the huge salmon as they swam upstream. The Highlight of this tour was the Devils Canyon - experiencing the Power of a Class 6 WhitewaterRapids. In Denali, we took an extended tour to the "Tundra" which I highly recommend. We encountered many Moose, Fox, Caribou, Dal Sheep and Grizzly Bears. Unfortunately like many other Alaska Tourists, the Rain and Fog Prevented us from having a View of the Famous "Mt. McKinley".
From Denali we took a Dome Train to Whittier where we would board our cruise. The 8 Hr trip was filled with many more wildllife sightings and beautiful scenery … even Sarah Palin's Home.
Once onboard the Sapphire Princess, our first stop was at Hubbard Glacier. It was a huge mountain of ice and was incredible but Glacier Bay National Park was the Highlight of this Cruise.
It is impossible to explain how incredible it is to hear the thunderous roar and cracking of this bright Blue Glacier and then see the ice falling into the ocean below and creating huge waves.
Our Captain and the Rangers that boarded our ship told us this had been one of the most exceptional days of calving that they had experienced in very long time . We were parked for over 2hrs!
Our next stop was Skagway - The Gateway to the Klondike Goldrush. Here, we boarded the White Pass Railroad, the century old train that tunnels through the mountain up 2, 865ft to the summit.
On the way we were able to view beautiful waterfalls, glaciers and wildlife. From here we too a Chilkoot Tour to the Yukon … Back in Canada! More Bears and Moose and a visit to the dog musher camp to play with the Husky Puppies.
In Juneau, we chose a Whale Watching Tour with Harv and Marv's Outback Alaska ( # 1 on Trip Advisor) and we were thrilled! This was another exceptional day as not only did we experience a Mother Orca teaching her 2 babies to hunt a seal, we also seen 18 Humpback Whales who lined up and performed as if they were choreographed by Seaworld … Unbelievable!! Our Captain Steve was the Best and he used a" Hydrophone" for us to hear the whales singing and communicating with each other. We were then taken on a short bus ride to view the Menden hill Glacier and the bear feeding park … best tour ever!
In Ketchikan- the Salmon Capital of the World, we took time to walk through the beautiful little town and experienced the shops and restaurants ( and even an olden day Brothel- Dolly's House) on Creek Street, a wooden boardwalk. We then took a small tour bus to Herring cove where we were able to view several Black bears feding on the Salmon on the river banks. We then visited the Saxman Totem Pole Park and our guide told us the amazing stories behind each of them.
As we sailed our final day through the Inside Passage we were entertained by many playful whales , seals and incredible scenery … we even finally seen the SUN!!
Overall an incredible vacation!
