If you are a dual citizen of the U.K. (British or Irish) and another country (such as Canada), there are important changes that may affect your future travel to the United Kingdom.

What’s Changing?

As of February 25, 2026, British and Irish dual nationals must enter the U.K. using:

A valid British or Irish passport, or
Their foreign passport (e.g., Canadian) with a Certificate of Entitlement (Right of Abode) attached

Travelling on a foreign passport alone will no longer be sufficient.

What Are Your Options?

If you are a U.K. dual citizen, you have three choices:

Travel on Your British or Irish Passport (Recommended Option)

  • Renew or apply for a British passport (currently £94.50 within the U.K.; higher fees and longer processing times apply if applying from abroad)
  • Irish passport fee is approximately €75
  • Processing times vary depending on where you apply
  • This is typically the simplest and most straightforward option for entry

Apply for a Certificate of Entitlement (Right of Abode)

  • Allows you to travel on your foreign passport
  • Current cost: £589
  • Must be renewed each time you renew your passport
  • This option may be suitable if you prefer not to maintain a British passport, but it is significantly more expensive.

Renounce British Citizenship

  • You may formally renounce your British citizenship and travel using your other nationality
  • You would then require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the U.K., if applicable
  • This is a permanent decision and should be considered carefully.

Special Note for Families

If you have Canadian-born children with British parents, additional considerations may apply. We recommend reviewing the guidance below to understand how these changes may affect your family’s travel plans.
