Charline Fortier – Our Italy Expert
This intimate, worry-free, Italian adventure is designed and hosted by our own Charline Fortier, a Maritime Travel counsellor for more than 40 years. Charline is an expert on all things Italian, and has been to Italy more than 50 times – on her own, with her wine-expert husband, and hosting groups. “I feel more at home in my beloved Italy, than I do in Canada,” she will tell you. Charline loves to share her secrets… whether it’s a favourite restaurant where she’s friends with the owners, the best little gelato shop, or the best shoe store in town. Charline speaks Italian, English and French.

Overseas travel to Venice, Italy.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 – Arrive at Venice Airport. You will be met by a Maritime Travel representative at the international arrivals area. From there, you will be provided a transfer to our hotel in Venice. The balance of the afternoon is yours to rest and rejuvenate. Later this evening we will meet up with Charline at one of her favorite restaurants and enjoy a welcome dinner with wine as we get to know our travelling companions. To bed early this evening to rest up for our adventure ahead. D
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 – Following breakfast at our hotel, we will pick up our transfer to Tronchetto, where we will board our private water launch, which will take us to Piazza San Marco for our walking tour of Venice. You will see the Piazza San Marco, the Basilica San Marco, and the Doges Palace which you will have time to visit later in the day if you wish. This afternoon, join us for a visit to the island of Burano, known for its fishermen and lace-makers. There will be time for lunch on your own, and to explore this lovely island before we head back to San Marco and some more free in time in Venice. We will make our own way back to our hotel. Supper and the balance of the evening will be on your own. Be sure to get some great suggestions from Charline, or perhaps join her! B
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 – Today we depart Venice and head for Panzano in Chianti, where we will stay in a villa for the next two nights. Once we have settled in, you will have time to explore the property. En route from Venice, we will stop in Tuscany at a former hunting lodge of the Medici family for a fun cooking class. B,D
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2 – Today is a free day to enjoy the beautiful little village of Panzano which is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards for as far as the eye can see. Tonight, we will enjoy a typical Tuscan dinner at a local restaurant. B,D
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 – Following breakfast, we will travel to Florence. We will meet our local guide for a short walking tour, including the Piazza Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria. Lunch and dinner are on your own. Charline will provide suggestions. B
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 – Make sure you eat a good breakfast, as this will be our shopping day in Florence. Charline will point you in the right direction and highlight some of the best places for the best prices. Leather, silk, jewelry, shoe stores, handbags, clothing – you will be overwhelmed. You can also visit Michelangelo’s David or the famous Uffizi museum. B
MONDAY, OCTOBER 5 – Our centrally located hotel makes it easy to enjoy another free day exploring the wonderful city of Florence. Meet for supper at Charline’s favorite trattoria. B,D
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6 – Today we travel from Florence and make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Assisi. Pilgrims have been coming to Assisi since the 13th century to venerate St Francis who was born and buried here, but you don’t have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of this post-card-perfect town. Framed by the long undulating hills of Umbria and the forest of Monte Subasio, Assisi is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world and one of Italy’s most spell binding gems. On arrival we will enjoy a “Taste of Umbria” luncheon where we will experience Umbrian specialties such as wines, cheese, truffles and more. After lunch we enjoy a tour of the Basilica with our private guide. B,L
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7 – Today is a free day. Explore the town, do a little shopping or just relax and enjoy the many amenities of our countryside hotel. B
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8 – Following breakfast, we will make our way to the charming medieval town of Pienza. The views are incredible, and the shopping is just as good! This region is renowned for its roast suckling pig and pecorino cheese. It is a gastronomical delight. B
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 – Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at our hotel and a free day to enjoy Pienza and anything you may have missed yesterday. B
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 – After breakfast, we set out bright and early to arrive in Rome and meet our local guide to do a walking tour of Baroque Rome including Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. After a quick lunch we will meet our guide Cinzia Cortese for a tour of the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums. After checking into your hotel to relax and refresh, this evening we will get together and enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. B,D
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11 – A free day in Rome. The day is yours to unearth more of what Rome has to offer. Why not toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, tour the Colosseum or climb the Spanish Steps. The choices are endless. Ask Charline for some suggestions. The choices are endless! B
MONDAY, OCTOBER 12 – This morning we say goodbye to Rome, and make our way to the Amalfi Coast. En route we will visit the fascinating preserved remains of Herculaneum – sister city to Pompeii. Though not as well known, the remnants of this civilization are said to be better preserved than those of Pompeii. We will enjoy a private, guided tour. We will then arrive in the town of Amalfi and check into our hotel. The balance of the day and evening are free for you to enjoy and explore on your own. B
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13 & WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14 – These are fabulous free days for you to explore and experience the stunning Amalfi coast. After breakfast each day, get some insider tips from Charline… Go to Ravello, or Positano or Capri (an easy boat ride away), or just sit back on your own and enjoy the lovely beach close to our hotel. Charline has lots of suggestions and tips to point you in the right direction as the possibilities are endless. Tuesday evening, we will meet up for a farewell dinner and toast our new friends and many amazing experiences. B,D
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 – After breakfast, we will say farewell to the Amalfi Coast and Italy and make our way to Naples Airport to catch our flight back home. B
